Diwali, usually celebrated between October and November, is considered a major religious holiday for Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. During the holidays, “people gather, have parties, give gifts and often pray for a prosperous future,” according to Deven Patel, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Department of South Asia Studies. People often light candles and lanterns in their homes and in the hallways to illuminate their surroundings.

Chopra and Jonas were not the only stars celebrating Diwali this year.

In addition to appearing at the Chopra and Jonas party, Teigen posted a photo of himself on Instagram wearing a traditional Indian costume.

Actress Mindy Kaling hosted a Diwali dinner in partnership with the phenomenal and beauty brand Live Tinted to highlight the voices of South Asian women in the media and entertainment industries, according to a media statement. The party included a series of prominent South Asian women, such as Chopra, author Meena Harris, comedian Lilly Singh, comedian Liza Koshy and "Never Have I Ever" star Poorna Jagannathan.

“We treated amazing women in our community and shared stories and celebrated alone (with delicious food and great fashion moments),” Kaling wrote in an Instagram post. “This would not have happened when I moved to LA ten years ago, but now we are here. Next year will be very big. ”

Harris also posted a TikTok video on his Instagram preparing for the party.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the first vice president of South Asian descent, posted a video on his Instagram commenting on the holiday: "Let's remember to respect the light between each other," he said.

“Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating the Lantern Festival here in the United States and around the world,” Harris said in a video clip. "(Douglas Emhoff) and I extend our warmest wishes for a holiday full of light, love and prosperity."

President Joe Biden and his first wife Jill Biden also took part in Diwali, as seen in a photo the president shared on his Instagram with the first lady to light a series of candles.

"May the light of Diwali remind us that in the darkness there is knowledge, wisdom and truth: from division, unity (and) despair, hope," Biden said in the photo.
